Interview Bongane Chappies Mathabela (U23 International)

We sat down with the current u23 international and former u20 star Bongane “Chappies” Mathabela regarding the upcoming game and his ambitions for the current season.

  1. How were your preparations for this upcoming game?

B.M. I believe we have prepared well for this game and covered all the areas and situations that we might come across in Richards Bay. Thanda have proven to be a team to beat and we will afford them the respect they deserve but we are not afraid.

  1. What do you think went wrong in your previous game?

B.M. We did not stick to our strength which is to play the ball on the ground. We played a lot of high balls and that was different from what we have been doing at training in preparation for that game. We have managed to look at the video to see what went wrong and feel that if such a situation arises we will be better prepared in tackling it.

  1. Thanda has been on a high, do you think you will be able to get something out of this game?

B.M. The spirit in camp is high and we are confident that we will come back home with a result. The only thing that we need to do is to stick to the game plan and work hard.

  1. On facing your childhood teammate Deco Maela who is the Captain of Thanda?

B.M. I believe he has done well for himself and that again proves the point that we have talent in Witbank. We have faced each other a number of times and we both know our strengths and weaknesses. It’s going to be interesting because in our last game where we emerge victorious by four goals to one he was suspended.

  1. What goals have you set for the season?

B.M. Firstly is to command a regular place in the team. The main goal is to help the team to gain promotion to the elite league and bring back the glory day’s ekasi lami. On a personal level is to make the u23 team and become a regular.

  1. What would you like to say to the supporters of the team and the people of your community?

B.M. Their support is vital for the success of this team. I would like to urge them to be patient with us and we will do everything in our power to bring smiles on their faces. This group want to make history by taking it one step further to the PSL. I also believe the amount of experience from the likes of Allen Lebyane and Vusi Mthimkhulu will come in handy in trying to attain this dream.
